The Man Purse Debate

"Its A Satchel"

So I am walking into my building yesterday and I see one of my door guys who I always talk to. The conversation is pretty standard for tenant/ building personnel relationships, Sports and women (not  always in that order depending on who happens to be in the lobby)

Yeah I Rock it...so what????

But as I am beginning to make my way for the elevator my buddy/door man says……

“Whats with the man purse?”

Now my very VERY first thought was of Zach Galifiankis from “THE HANGOVER”  :

Indiana Jones Wears One

Phil: You’re not really wearin that are you?
Alan: Wearing what?
Phil: The man purse. You’re actually gonna wear that or are you guys just fuckin with me?
Alan: It’s where I keep all my things. I get a lot of compliments on this. Plus it’s not a man purse, it’s called a sachel. Indiana Jones wears one
Phil: So does Joy Behar.

But then I started thinking does my Louis V messenger bag look like a man purse, is it actually a man purse?

Now I am pretty comfortable with my ability to rock the LV and pull it off just fine , but clearly the haters are everywhere, even in my own building. Clearly there is an ongoing  debate regarding the Man Purse because I found a website dedicated to the subject .

Oh then I realized this site has a very clever name particularly for baseball freaks like me, the site is called THE SATCHEL PAGES (Satchel Paige being the oldest rookie to ever play major league baseball and one of the earliest players to break the color barrier

But I digress.

Please note the only reason I wrote this post was so I could use the word SATCHEL and reference “THE HANGOVER”

Thanks for listening.

"Oh Im So Old School"

Ok these are not “HERMES BOAT SHOES” but when I saw the image of these new Kicks from the Converse Jack Purcell line, the first thing that came to me was that classic Jay Z lyric…

“Lampin in the Hamptons, the weekends man
The Stan Smith Adidas and the Campers
Or playin guts on the cruise, Hermes boat shoes
The Izod bucket on I’m so old school”
That Ni$$a Jigga

Is it me or are these joints kind of hot?? It is me or might Diddy be rocking these? Is it me or will Diddy BE rocking these this summer while in St. Tropez with his man-servant Mr. Bentley shielding him from the Mediterranean sun with a Louis V umbrella?

These Converse Jack Purcell are def taking on a nautical theme, Converse drops a new rendition of its classic Jack Purcell Ox. The kicks feature a mostly white base, complimented by navy flag detailing throughout the uppers with a multi-color flag motif on the clear outsoles.

Shawn Stussy – S.Double

Shawn Stussy had a profound effect on my adolescence.  Stussy did not have th greatest distribution in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. And  living on the east coast in NYC did not making finding Stussy any easier. For me this was the golden age of skateboarding and  really the birth of the street/surf/skate wear industry.

On the Upper West Side there was jean store called Pandemonium that would occasionally have some cool Stussy Tees. Eventually Union opened in SOHO and all my Stussy dreams came true. I would hop on the Lance Mountain Powell mini and shoot down to the shop in hopes of finding that Stussy Chanel Logo Tee or the infamous “Hood” tee (Compton, The Bronx, etc) The beauty of the Stussy brand was that because it was hard to find, if you had the gear it seemed like you were up on something that all skater kids jocked but not all could find.

Eventually in I believe 1991 the first Stussy store opened in SOHO and I had to have it all, I can recall fondly walking into that shop (which was located across the street from where the Apple Store SoHo location is currently housed, at the time the Apple Store was a post office if memory serves me.) Anyway I remember walking into the Stussy store on the day it opened and they were playing DAS EFX on the sound system. The Shit was just perfect.

And who can forget the incredible Stussy print ads from Thrasher Magazine and Transworld. Classic Material. (But that is for a whole other post)

S. Double New York Tee

Fast forward to present day and the Stussy company is no longer owned by founder and lead designer Shawn Stussy, but the flyness still remains. And Shawn Stussy has not stopped delivering the goods either. His line called S. Double (S.hawn S.tussy) is pretty fresh. I don’t have any pieces myself, but I will be on the look out. You should too!
