Shawn Stussy – S.Double

Posted in Accessory, Clothing, Design, Fashion, Hip-Hop, History, New York City, Skateboarding with tags , , , , , , , , on April 22, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Shawn Stussy had a profound effect on my adolescence.  Stussy did not have th greatest distribution in the late 1980’s and early 90’s. And  living on the east coast in NYC did not making finding Stussy any easier. For me this was the golden age of skateboarding and  really the birth of the street/surf/skate wear industry.

On the Upper West Side there was jean store called Pandemonium that would occasionally have some cool Stussy Tees. Eventually Union opened in SOHO and all my Stussy dreams came true. I would hop on the Lance Mountain Powell mini and shoot down to the shop in hopes of finding that Stussy Chanel Logo Tee or the infamous “Hood” tee (Compton, The Bronx, etc) The beauty of the Stussy brand was that because it was hard to find, if you had the gear it seemed like you were up on something that all skater kids jocked but not all could find.

Eventually in I believe 1991 the first Stussy store opened in SOHO and I had to have it all, I can recall fondly walking into that shop (which was located across the street from where the Apple Store SoHo location is currently housed, at the time the Apple Store was a post office if memory serves me.) Anyway I remember walking into the Stussy store on the day it opened and they were playing DAS EFX on the sound system. The Shit was just perfect.

And who can forget the incredible Stussy print ads from Thrasher Magazine and Transworld. Classic Material. (But that is for a whole other post)

S. Double New York Tee

Fast forward to present day and the Stussy company is no longer owned by founder and lead designer Shawn Stussy, but the flyness still remains. And Shawn Stussy has not stopped delivering the goods either. His line called S. Double (S.hawn S.tussy) is pretty fresh. I don’t have any pieces myself, but I will be on the look out. You should too!

Adidas Originals by Originals James Bond & David Beckham Tennis Vintage Hi

The first batch of Adidas Originals by James Bond & David Beckham was not terribly impressive, I took a trip to the SOHO location with the intention of buying a pair , but I was simply not moved. I ended up with what must be my 50th pair of Rod Lavers and called it a day.

Among the high-profile collaborations from adidas Originals this past season included the David Beckham Originals by Originals capsule designed by UNDFTD’s James Bond. A recent release features the SS 80 Tennis Vintage Hi with a minimalistic and simple black and white colorway.

But I am happy to say that this latest style seems to be a step in the right direction for the Beckham brand within the Adidas Originals universe.

New Iphone 4G…Lost and Found!!

Posted in Accessory, Apple, Design with tags , , , , on April 20, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

So the big tech rumour of the day is the discovery of the new IPHONE 4G in a bar somewhere in California. The good peeps at Gizmodo got the low down…here it is!

Apparently, an Apple Software Engineer, Gray Powell had lost the new iPhone he was testing which was disguised as a iPhone 3GS at a local bar up in Redwood City, CA. Now it’s in the hands of the folks over at Gizmodo. It probably was intentional since Apple did not take any action or trip off the fact that they posted tons of photos of it on their website.

Looks good, has similarities with the iPad when it comes to the trim area. Good thing I held off on the 3GS, once this comes out, perfect timing for an upgrade.

What’s new

• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It’s unclear if it’s the 960×640 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the “Connect to iTunes” screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What’s changed

• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

So now I have to buy an Ipad and a new Iphone, I am  taking donations…lol!!!

Oh Dr. Dre….How could you???

Posted in Accessory, Baseball, Hip-Hop, MLB, Music, New York Yankees, Rappers with tags , , , , , , , , on April 6, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

I love Dr. Dre, always have. Maybe the best hip-hop producer of all time. But after Sundays Yankees vs. Red Sox game that kicked off the 2010 campaign he dropped more than a few notches in my book.

Much to my chagrin I see the one and only Chronic King sporting a RED SOX JERSEY….are you kidding me?

Now of course later I found out that Dre was simply pumping his new c0-branded beats by Dre. Headphones…. but that is no excuse.

The rapper/super producer showed up at Fenway Park to promote the Red Sox Beats by Dr. Dre headphones from Monster. The officially licensed Red Sox Beats are the latest version of Dr. Dre’s well-received headphones. Dr. Dre donned a Red Sox jersey and took a little batting practice in the historic baseball park.

The Red Sox are the first officially licensed professional sports team to have a set of Beats. Why does a baseball team needs branded headphones? I’m not sure but the Red Sox fans are some of the most devoted you’ll find anywhere so there is likely a market for these. The Red Sox Beats come with a carrying case, cables and an adapter and sell for $400.

Now Dre, I will be first on-line to buy the much-anticipated DETOX album whenever it drops, but you would have to pay me to wear those headphones….Call me when the WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEE version drops.

Let the Accessory Games Begin! – Temple Bags IPAD CASE

Posted in Accessory, Apple with tags , , , , , on April 1, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

With the incredibly anticipated IPAD (wi-fi version) dropping this Saturday, the million and one accessories that I imagine will be developed have begun to roll out. This case by Temple Bags does not do too much for me aesthetically , but its interesting nonetheless.

Taking full advantage of the release of Apple’s iPad, luggage specialists Temple Bags have just launched this case, which has been custom designed to house your new iPad. Available in either leather or canvas, the bag features a padded shoulder strap, internal pocket and two stand options which allow one to view the iPad vertically or horizontally. The bags are available today from Temple Bags’ online store.

I am just mad I have to wait another 3 weeks till the Ipad 3G drops….The Apple Stores will be wild this weekend!!

Supreme Nunchucks & Bathing Ape Chopsticks…Branding run amuck??

Posted in Accessory, Benihana, Collectibles, YouTube Classics with tags , , on March 17, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Bruce Lee is smiling somewhere!

Two wonderful brands ; Supreme & Bathing Ape have taken their logo game to a whole new level.

Supreme has gone Bruce Lee on everyone and released branded Nunchucks. In case you are not a martial arts head and have never had the pleasure of seeing the greatest karate movie ever made “Enter The Dragon” , Nunchucks are defined as : An oriental hand weapon for defense against frontal assault, consisting of two foot-long hardwood sticks joined by a chain.  Supreme produced a video to show off their latest branded creation, but you can scour the web for that yourself. I prefer to go to the source , here is my man Bruce Lee getting nasty in a scene from “Enter The Dragon”

Get your weapons at both the NY and LA location

Supreme – New York

TEL #: 212-966-7799

Supreme – Los Angeles
439 North Fairfax Avenue | Map
Los Angeles, CA 90036
TEL #: 323-655-6205

Bathing Ape has extended their never-ending brand to less hostile territory, although if your nice like Bruce I am sure you could use them as a weapon. Bathing Ape Chopsticks!! When I think about it, how cool would it be  to roll into your favorite asian restaurant… lets say..Benihana.  I take out my camouflage chopstick case and remove my very own Bathing Ape chopsticks….how ya like me now?????

You might say that this is branding run amuck , but I disagree. If you are gonna walk around with your own chopsticks and martial arts weapon..they might as well come from the right brand!!

Oh and if your not up on the greatest Kung -Fu Legend ever..check out Bruce Lee Dot Com and get your education on.

Jean-Charles de Castelbajac aka JC/DC

Posted in Accessory, Design, Fashion with tags , , , on March 17, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Paris is like a bit of a home away from home for my family, every Dec 22nd we fly out to the city of lights and take in a week of intense luxury, ridiculous eating and irresponsible shopping..but hey that is the MARCUS way…

Now me personally I like to hit as many sneaker spots as I can, you never know what colorway you might find in a euro only limited release etc, so during one of my kick excursions 4 years ago I stumbled across a boutique which was pretty much like nothing I had ever seen before. On a somewhat quiet side street, I was suddenly blinded by a window with the sharpest yellow colors you can imagine.  And below what I can only describe as a fashionable womans fireman outfit was a couch….A COUCH MADE OF TEDDY BEARS!!!

And so for the first time I walked into the world of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac also knows as JC/DC!

The Store is like one huge colorful work of art and the clothes match the feeling of the boutique.

Now the truth is I have never actually purchased anything for myself at Castelbajac, the few mens pieces I have seen at the Paris location just did not fit me, but as a designer and as really an artist, the guy is pretty fascinating. And though I am certainly no fashionista, I would have figured that he would get some mainstream play here in the states. Perhaps he has and I missed it.

But thankfully the peeps at Hypebeast (who are so on top of their game) featured some new pieces from his mens line , which in turn led me to write this post. Now after doing a little research it seems like JC/DC has carved out a pretty amazing career. Dressing Madonna in an infamous teddy bear coat and doing some pretty crazy looking work inspired by LEGO.

The new mens pieces (particularly the varsity jacket) featured below are pretty fresh and perhaps not as loud as some of his other creations. Jean Charles de Castelbajac is truly an artist. I am glad I came across his work!!
