Louis Vuitton Journeys Campaign

Every now and again certain brands seem to capture the essence of their products through creative, original and unique marketing campaigns.

For the past few years luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton has executed a series of brilliant print ads that comprise the ” JOURNEYS ” campaign.

It’s hard to put into words why this campaign is effective and on message. The images , captured by the brilliant (and very bankrupt) Anne Leibovitz , utilize an array of celebrity personalities , each in the midst of a personal “Journey”…..

Keith Richards seemingly on tour in a hotel room strumming on his guitar, Sean Connery overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean , Mikhail Gorbachev in the back seat of a car looking out the window at the Berlin Wall… Astronauts , Buzz Aldrin, Sally Ride and Jim Lovell gazing at the moon on top of a classic automobile. Andre Aggasi and Steffi Graff embracing in a hotel suite,

The images focus on the individual rather than the piece of Louis Vuitton luggage that each is carrying on with them on their “Journey”

It is the subtle placement of the Louis Vuitton pieces in the pictures which make each image all the more striking. And the latest addition to the campaign is no different, in the latest image soccer legends Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidan, presumably in a dusty European bistro playing a game of foosball.  Of course this particular piece of the “Journeys” campaign is in line with the upcoming 2010 World Cup of Soccer, which will grip the entire planet for the month of June. The house of L0uis Vuitton is nothing if not timely.

I like to shed light on different subjects that I find to be close to perfect, The Louis Vuitton Journeys Campaign is just that..PERFECT.

The Man Purse Debate …continues….The IPAD Saves the Day!!

Posted in Apple, Comedy, Print Media, The Hangover, Uncategorized with tags , , , , , on April 27, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Shouts out to Ben Ullman for putting me up on this great Gizmodo article,

Does the iPad Make Man Purses Okay Now?

The iPad isn’t crazy big. But it’s too big for a pocket. That means one thing: a bag. Not too big of a bag. More like a purse.

I have no inherent distaste for the man purse.* In fact I’ve been waiting for years for my literally closeted obsession with small bags to become socially acceptable. If the arbitrating metric for men’s accessories is utility without gaudiness, the man purse falls comfortably within acceptable boundaries. It lacks the practicality of the backpack, perhaps the most versatile option, but doesn’t dress down a suit. Nothing looks more tacky than a man in business attire with a backpack.

The larger options, attaché cases or messenger bags, are excellent compromises when one must carry a laptop. But one of the beautiful things about the iPad is that it can ably replace a laptop in many situations. Sitting in a coffee shop browsing the web. Reading an ebook on a train. Watching pornography in a hotel room. To slip the relatively small iPad into a laptop-sized bag is inelegant.

Of course this presumes that we’ll want to carry around our iPads at all times, just in case. Our New York contingent claims they’ll rarely take their iPads out of their tiny apartments, content to use them as coffee table portals to their media. Why take an iPad out on the town when an iPhone does nearly the same stuff? A fair point for city dwellers, yet I would challenge with this: What about keyboards?

One of the most exciting thing about the iPad for writers is that we’ll finally be able to use 2002’s most exciting technology with our Apple portable: the Bluetooth keyboard. Even if Apple allows the iPhone the same Bluetooth keyboard access as they do for iPad—a dream come true for this dork—you’ll want to keep a small keyboard on your person. That brings us right back to the man purse.

Although I’m not sure how much you can read into the pre-release offerings from iPad accessory manufacturers, clearly at least a few of them have considered the man purse—or more commonly, “satchel”—as the optimal size for toting an iPad. Even the cases sold without straps are only a couple of D-rings away from being dashing little man purses.

I’ll cop to being too concerned with the question. I’m the sort of man who has nearly as many bags of varying sizes as he does things to put in them. I’ve been in search of the perfect leather satchel for years, resigned that I’ll never find perfection until I pick up the awl and punch and captive-bolt pistol and craft my own

I’ve refrained from the man purse over the years primarily because its primary proponents tend to look like total twats. “What do you have in the purse that you can’t keep in your pockets, Nancy?” A phone in the pocket, never the belt holster—and a huge bag for everything else.

But maybe the mainstream success of the iPad—I’m thinking it’s a lock, if that weren’t already clear—will finally give the varnish of utility to the man purse, finally making it acceptable for even the sweatiest sweatpants stallion to toss his shit into a tiny ballistic nylon satchel and get back to the really important things in life: arguing whether using Apple products in the first place make you look like a total homo.**..

“The Promo” by The Jungle Brothers feat Q-Tip

Posted in Hip-Hop, Hip-Hop History, Music, New York City, Print Media, Rappers with tags , , , on April 27, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

If you know your history, you have this album!

The Jungle Brothers get no love, when the history of hip-hop is told the JB’s are a mere footnote in the Native Tongue movement, but before you could have a Tribe, a De La, a Latifah , or  a Black Sheep, you had the Jungle Brothers.

"Q-Tip , His name"

This particular track is one  for the truly educated, and as far as I know it was the first time I heard Q- Tip on wax and believe me it was on WAX.  If memory serves it was the last track on the album. Way before Tribes “Instinctive Travels” debut  album dropped .

That beat is so simple its brilliant.

Enjoy!!!

“Jungle Brother , JB for short” …….

.”Q-Tip…. his name, he’s into business…… not into games”

Yanks Core 4 On The Cover of Sports Illustrated

Posted in Baseball, MLB, New York City, New York Yankees, Print Media with tags , , , , , , on April 27, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Is it me or am I simply just ahead of the curve, perhaps I am clairvoyant , or perhaps my obsession with the New York Yankees is so deep that my ability to see into the future only applies to the Bronx Bombers. Well last week I posted that the Yankees “CORE 4” all deserve to be in enshrined in THE HALL OF FAME in Cooperstown , NY.

Now  its looks like the good folks at Sports Illustrated have taken a cue from Matthews World and put the “CORE 4” on the next cover!!

World Series Rings, The White House..now the cover of SI!!

Who deserves it more than they do. The Yanks are in Baltimore these next few days , after their small pit stop at the White House yesterday. Hopefully they can tackle the birds with a sweep.  Not a bad week for these guys!

GAME “THE RED ROOM” MIXTAPE

https://i1.wp.com/www.babble.com/CS/blogs/famecrawler/2008/10/01-07/TheGameRapper.jpg

So I am sitting at my desk at home after another rainy monday , and was feeling like I need some new music in my world. Now the rapper GAME might not be your answer to a brighter outlook on the day, but today GAME and DK Skee released a free mixtape on XXLMAG.com , but then I got to thinking and although The Game has his fair share of detractors, and as a NY Hip-Hop fan with a steadfast dedication to East Coast MC’s , I have to say Game is the real deal.

So I fired up the Itunes and threw on “Scream On Em” produced by Swizz beats from “The Doctors Advocate” album. That song is about as hard as Brock Lesnar. Also not the best song to sit at your laptop and write, yet here I sit (how lazy am I?) So then I scroll down to “One Love /Its Okay” ,  you can look up the definition of HARD in a Websters dictionary and that song might just start playing , flipping Junior Reid’s “One Blood” ….thats genius. Opening line , you know you remember it…”Dre, I see dead people” then  Junior Reid comes firing in… I can recall in the summer of 2006 being in Las Vegas when this song first dropped and being on the Westside the DJ was only too glad to spin this one back at least 10 times……IN A ROW!!!

Now is he the worlds greatest rapper, certainly not, but he def knows what he is doing. He has clearly always had a solid team of marketing people behind him (sure being on Interscope never hurts), But from his single selection , to ALL His artwork and branding, the fonts he uses , I am feeling him. Just look at the artwork for the new tape.

One of things I love about Game is his ceaseless promotion of his West Coast affiliation and his blatant gang affiliation (sup BLOODS). Game has the ill LA DODGER Logo tattoed on HIS FACE in RED INK. Yes, THE GAME is HARD. I mean he practically marketed himself as the second coming of NWA and reps Compton harder than  Eazy E, and you know what…it workes well. But you can tell he means it. His affiliation with Dre aside, this man bleeds California RED. HE is an NWA lifer for sure.

https://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=2&ik=c7bb77bba9&view=att&th=1282d413d5ccb91a&attid=0.0&disp=inline&zw

Huge Shout to my boy Lester at WEST NYC for hooking me up with the classic NWA photo above. It is spring time people so go buy some damn KICKS (at West NYC of course)

You can tell GAME has a deep respect for the history of Hip-Hop, he names drops rappers constantly but rather than diss , he gives props. I mean he has his beefs for sure, but take one listen to “Games Pain” featuring Keisha Cole . The song is a sweet history lesson on the genre. And while you’re at it listen to “My Life’ Feat Weezy and “Wouldnt Get Far” featuring Kanye. Straight HITS!!!!!

https://i2.wp.com/blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/Rap_Game.jpg

Now of course putting out a free mixtape and dropping it on the internet is about as original as breathing, but when GAME does his thing , it feels like an event. Enlisting XXL as the distribution platform is also not rocket science but they have done their thing in executing it. And of course this is pre-cursor to the forthcoming proper “ALBUM” coming this summer. But this Mixtape has all the feelings of a real LP. I mean this tape features Lil Wayne, Diddy, Jim Jones, Just Blaze, Nippsy Hustle, Busta , Pharrell, Jadakiss and Birdman. Like I said The Game gets his respect in the industry.

So is the tape any good, I have no idea!!

Since its still D-Loading…..

But while I wait… I spit my lyrics, cuz typing this blog is about as close to rapping as young matty gets! ….holla at ya boy.

What is the worlds most valuable sports franchise???

Posted in Baseball, MLB, New York Yankees, Print Media with tags , , , , on April 23, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Of course I would like to dispute Forbes Magazine and state that a true dollar value can not be placed on the greatest sports franchise on the planet, THE NEW YORK YANKEES. But clearly I am terribly biased.

But Forbes did compile an interesting list of the most valuable soccer franchises worldwide..check it out!

Courtesy of BrandDunk

According to Forbes, English Premiere League club Manchester United is once again the most valuable soccer club on the planet.  This is the 6th straight year that Forbes has selected Man U as the most valuable football club. Forbes assigned a value to Manchester United of $1.8 billion dollars (USD).  Below is a look at the top 20 most valuable soccer clubs in the world.

The valuation would rank Man U as the most valuable professional sports franchise in the world.  Forbes estimated the value of the New York Yankees at $1.6 billion this year and the Dallas Cowboys at $1.6 billion in 2009.  The global reach of Manchester United is a big factor in making their club more valuable than either of the US professional sports icons.

Top 20 Most Valuable Soccer Teams (2010)
1. Manchester United – $1.8 billion
2. Real Madrid – $1.3 billion
3. Arsenal – $1.1 billion
4. FC Barcelona – $1 billion
5. Bayern Munich – $990 million
6. Liverpool – $822 million
7. AC Milan – $800 million
8. Juventus – $656 million
9. Chelsea – $646 million
10. Inter Milan – $413 million
11. Schalke
12. Tottenham Hotspur
13. Olympique Lyonnais
14. Hamburg SV

John DeLorean x Cutty Sark

Posted in Collectibles, Design, Print Media, Uncategorized with tags , , on March 30, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Passover is a great time , family and friends get together every spring and celebrate a wonderful Jewish holiday. So yesterday as my mother was slaving in the kitchen (along with the catering staff) my father showed me some new pieces we acquired in our constantly expanding NY Yankee memorabilia collection. Some late 1970’s and early 1980’s World Series programs.

Of course looking at the line ups and the old school team photos are great, but the real treasure in these classic programs are the advertisements. Ads have a way a capturing a moment in time and a glimpse into our pop culture past.

I came across some gems in these three programs, but one really took the cake : The infamous renegade car designer John DeLorean in an ad for Cutty Sark , yes Cutty Sark the brand of liquor. And it’s not like Mr. DeLorean is simply featured as a celebrity endorsing his favorite alcoholic beverage , but there also appears the image of the iconic DeLorean car (most people would not it as Doc Browns time machine in “Back To The Future”)

Now anything related to DeLorean has always fascinated me, there was a family down the block from me growing up that owned a DeLorean and it was a sick looking car that always stuck with me. That fact coupled with the Delorean FBI drug sting story (which is  a whole other blog post entirely) makes Mr. DeLorean a unique and fascinating american entrepeneur.

But the true greatness of this Ad is that , it is a car company blatantly endorsing an alcohol brand complete with an image of both a drink and a car on the same page. How would the organization M.A.D.D. feel about this piece and would it even be legal in todays landscape?

Drinking and Driving is no joke, but again this ad gives a great look into what society was like in 1981, the crusade against drunk driving had clearly not gained steam at this point, but John Delorean was definitely making some hot looking rides!
