Law & Order: Los Angeles

Posted in New York City, NY Times, TV with tags , , , , , , , on May 18, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

What is the true definition of the phrase “adding insult to injury”?

I believe I have the answer and it is called…

“Law and Order : Los Angeles”

You have to wonder , with the original “Law & Order” only one season away from becoming the longest running show in the history of television, why they would cancel the show and not at least make some TV history. But just as puzzling is the thought that in the very same season that would have been record-breaking, NBC decides that the franchise is still viable and that it simply needs a new paint job with a spinoff set in Los Angeles. Of course this is coming from the network that thought Leno at 10pm was a bright idea and that they were going to turn the business model of primetime television upside down and be heralded as visionaries.

I don’t think so.

Now if you want to cancel, perhaps the greatest procedural drama of all time, only one short season away from history, that is the prerogative of the network. But what you don’t do is replace the most New York centric show of all time with an LA version. This is not CSI, where they can set up franchises as easily as opening a McDonald’s. No, this is Law & Order, the show was filmed on location all over the entire city literally. If you are a Law & Order fan and you live in NYC, they probably have shot an episode in your very own building where you live.  (They shot an episode in the lobby of two of my childhood apartment buildings. ) And if not that close to home then certainly on your block.

Law & Order lived and breathed New York.

And what about the actors, If you are a working actor in New York City or you even know a working actor in NYC, chances are they have been on Law & Order. Probably more than once!

My sister and I would often speak about different characters who were essentially extras, In one episode they were a murderer , in the next a judge and in the next a beat cop who discovers the body at the start of the episode.  Chances are if you live in the city long enough you probably passed a location shoot of Law & Order, with twenty years of filming on the streets of NY it was kind of hard not to. You can’t say that about any other show ever and most likely never will again.

Since NBC announced the cancellation of the show there have been some great articles about the impact the show had on the economy of New York and the basically devastating financial effects the cancellation of the show will have on actors, caterers , coffee shops and so on.

But my real bone to pick is with the idea that Law & Order will work in any place other than New York, to me it’s just a travesty and I question producer Dick Wolf (the mastermind of all the Law & Order franchises) He of all people should know that cancelling the original Law & Order and in the same breath starting a spin-off in LA is as close to TV blasphemy as one can get.

Law & Order Gavel

There is the saving grace of syndication and anyone who has not been living under a rock for the past 15 years knows that when Dick Wolf created Law & Order, what he created was the ultimate syndication machine. Law & Order, or one of its sister shows is ALWAYS ON TV.  24 HOURS A DAY , 7 DAYS A WEEK turn on your tube and somewhere on your dial an episode of Law & Order is being shown. So as the NY Times put it, “Law & Order might be gone, but it will not soon be forgotten”

That being said , If  NBC was not prepared to re-new the classic show, they simply should have let Lenny Brisco, Lt. Van Buren , Jack McCoy and all the other legendary characters ride off into the sunset of NYC…not LA.

N.B.C……Nothing But Chumps!

This post is dedicated to my mom and my sister, hardcore Law & Order fans forever!!

“Lost” Shows a RE-RUN…..Whats Happening????

Posted in Lost, TV with tags , , , , , on April 27, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Whats Happening???

Is ABC kidding me? Is the President of the United States making a speech that will impact the Globe? Is Adam Lambert going to add blush to his eye liner and cover a Taylor Dayne song on “Idol”??

With only like 4 episodes left of “LOST” and the worldwide geek community waiting with unrivaled anticipation, how the hell are they showing a repeat from 3 weeks ago.

Do the producers actually think that all the fans that have invested literally years of time to trying to figure out what on earth the show is actually about happened to miss an episode a few weeks back.

See here is the thing, you don’t MISS episodes of “LOST” you simply CANT. If you happened to not be home on a Tuesday night , you have the show on your DVR , and of course you have your DVR set up so that the only way the show can be erased is if you manually erase it yourself.  I mean this shit isnt “Flash Forward” here, we are talking about “LOST” for gods sake.

Ok maybe your DVR malfunctioned, (damn if you have Time Warner that might even be likely) But you have other options….

Ok lets just say you don’t even have a TV, not as crazy as it might sound in this day and age. Plenty of network TV on the web, so you simply slide over to ABC DOT COM or HULU and you watch, YOU CATCH UP. You don’t wait three weeks, watch future episodes and then pray that ABC decides to bless you with a re-run that you just happened to miss.

I mean there is more than enough time travel on this damn show that you don’t need to do your own time travel routine to catch up.

I am sure I sound like a raving lunatic but I write this with love in my heart, “LOST” is a once in a lifetime show, riveting, maddening , confusing and captivating and you know what….its ending! I mean it’s the only show I have EVER  logged into a chat room just to get some varying point of views on what the hell is going on.

Listen I like Science Fiction,  and I love Pop Culture and all that , but I have a job and I don’t go to comic-con, so my time is valuable.

May 23rd  is the end of the road, so every single Tuesday night episode is precious cargo , but not tonight, no tonight April 27th the Network execs decided to give us a night off , did they really think we need a breather… Shit Jack Bauer worked last night and he hasn’t slept in like 21 hours.

So what I am trying to say is that my dedication to “LOST” deserves more than tonight’s re-run episode…..

In fact the only re-run I am interested in seeing would be RERUN from “WHATS HAPPENING” popping and locking with Rog , Dee and Dwayne…..hey hey hey!!!

(That was for you Cortney)

“New Orleans is a city that lives in the imagination of the world”

– Creighton Bernette

TV can be a great wonderful medium. Every few years a show comes along and elevates what television can be , and for the past ten years or so HBO has been delivering the goods. “The Wire” in my opinion was the greatest American TV series of our time. Clearly not all agree, as evidenced by the shows lack of Emmy Awards. So I was very happy to wake up today and read the LA times and their review of the new HBO series “TREME” (pronounced TRU-MAY). Only the pilot episode has aired and already they are calling for Emmy Awards , I hope they are right.

“Treme” is the latest offering from “THE WIRE” creator David Simon, and I could not be more excited about this show. “Treme” is the story of post Katrina New Orleans and is set 3 months after the storm hit. It has the complex story lines and a deep ensemble cast much in the same way “The Wire” did. But as crime and urban decay played a central role in “The Wire” , it is the music of New Orleans that is the central figure here.

I have been fortunate to spend quite a bit of time in New Orleans and with a best friend that attended Tulane University in college, I had the opportunity to experience the city with people who albeit were not natives but who came to adopt the city as their own. I remember well my buddy Oliver telling me about the Rebirth Brass Band, The Meters, George Porter and P-Funk. Most of these musical acts I had never heard of, but they were music royalty in New Orleans. When I hit my first Mardi Gras in 1995 I got to see them all , the vibe and music of that city was infectious. I understand what David Simon is going for in “Treme”

The first episode follows a fascinating cast of characters as they struggle to get back to normal and rebuild their lives after the devastation of Katrina with wonderful authentic New Orleans music weaved throughout.

If you have had any experiences with New Orleans you will love this show, if you have not,  but enjoyed the story telling genius of David Simon you will also love “TREME”

It’s a must watch.

Are you Totally “LOST” ?

Posted in Lost, TV with tags , on February 4, 2010 by mattyfresh697400

Since the Tuesday night premiere of Season Six of  the ABC hit series “LOST” I have been trying to find both the courage and quite frankly the mental stamina to even write about the premier episode titled “LA X”

Prior to the episode ABC aired an hour recap show, which makes a rather futile attempt to refresh the memory of the long time hardcore faithful and perhaps even attract some new viewers. NEW VIEWERS…I DONT THINK SO PEOPLE….THAT SHIP HAS SAILED (and exploded I might

When me and my better half were watching this , we could not help but laugh as the producers attempted to put 5 seasons worth of insanity , of twists &  turns, time travel, love triangles, polar bears, mysterious black smoke and well you get the picture. Just watching the recap made my head spin and I have never missed a single episode EVER!

But little could prepare me for what the producers would deliver for the start of Season 6….AN ENTIRE ALTERNATE UNIVERSE where the Oceanic Jet Liner never crashes and on top of that insanity, they introduce an entire new cast of Maroon Clad “OTHERS” living in a Temple that no one has ever seen…How many fucking people live on this damn island anyway. The show , simply put is nothing short of Madness (but in a great way)

It might sound like I am complaining and in a way I am , the truth is I am always complaining about “LOST” .   In Fact after every single episode I curse Carlton and Damon (executive producers and writers) and wonder aloud or to myself..”what the fuck is this show about?” But in the very next breath I say.. “GENIUS”… and it is Genius, or at least I damn well hope it is. The creators of “LOST” are mad scientist scribes, and I have faith that on May 23rd when they air the Final Episode I will be happy I gave 6 years of my life to this wonderful and frustratingly addictive adventure.
