THOR & CAPTAIN AMERICA…..an “AVENGERS” Summer!!!

Posted in Collectibles, Comics, Movies with tags , , , , , , , , , on April 19, 2011 by mattyfresh697400

The Mighty Thor

I cannot lie,  I truly am a sucker for a good blockbuster movie.  Drop that Blockbuster in the summer and you might find me first on line geeked out talking about “Avengers” history and why I cant wait for Iron Man 3 to be released. But the truth is blockbusters are blockbusters because these films do not only appeal to the nerdy gamer fanboys out there, no actually blockbusters have the broadest appeal of all movies….thats what makes em blockbusters!!

But the Summer of 2011 is shaping up to be “THE SUMMER OF THE BLOCKBUSTER” …..it seems every weekend this summer another huge movie will be released and the festivities get started on May 6 with the release of “THOR”

Now ever since the good folks at Marvel Studios started to cross promote their characters (for example) Robert Downey Jr. aka Iron Man makes a brief cameo at the end of The Incredible Hulk and then Samuel L. Jackson aka Nick Fury makes a very brief appearance at the tail end of the credits  for Iron Man 1. ….I have been waiting for this summer when THOR the God Of Thunder and The First Avenger Captain America hit the big screen!!

As one might be able to tell I am well versed in Marvel lore which maybe does make me a nerdy fanboy..but I digress.

Captain America

The point here is that Marvel has been laying the foundation for what might be the ultimate comic book blockbuster of all time ‘THE AVENGERS”.  Where the stars of Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and the forthcoming Captain America all join forces to form a super group. Considering “The Avengers” would star Robert Downey Jr. , Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo , Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans , Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner, to say that this is anything less than a massive and ambitious endeavor is the understatement of the year!

The Avengers!!

So with Iron Man and The Hulk already two films deep in their respective franchises , the summer of 2011 gives us not one but two HUGE marvel superhero films..and both are sure to be huge…I hope.

Thor gets first dibs and really is the start of the entire summer movie season with a May 6th release date. Then on July 22nd Captain America gets his shot at once again becoming America’s most beloved super soldier. But Thor and Captain America will not be the only superheroes getting some burn this summer…On June 17th Ryan Reynolds get his shot at Super Hero stardom as his becomes the Green Lantern, which although not a Marvel release (Green Lantern is from the DC Universe of Superman and Batman) will also sure to be a big one.

But THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA are the two releases I am most excited for as they will lead into Iron Man 3 and most importantly the first “AVENGERS” installment coming in summer 2012.

The Marvel Universe is simply no joke!!

The King’s Speech

Posted in Movies, The Oscars with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on January 13, 2011 by mattyfresh697400

Every year when December rolls around and the awards show season in Hollywood kicks into high gear, I try to make sure that I see pretty much every film that might have a shot at winning the most awards… Golden Globes , SAGs, and of course Oscars.

The Kings Speech was pretty much the last film on my list and I have to say that it was a great movie, and a fascinating bit of World history that I can only imagine most people certainly know nothing about.

The film stars Colin Firth as King George VI and Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush as Speech Therapist Lionel Logue.

The Year is 1939 and the United Kingdom is on the brink of WAR.  the passing of King George V puts the empire in turmoil. George VI was never supposed to inherit the throne of the Worlds Greatest Empire. Rather it was his brother, King Edward VIII who took over the throne with the Kings passing.

But….King Edward VIII was forced to abdicate the throne when he revealed his desire to married a twice divorced American woman named Wallis Simpson.

King George VI

As the second son, King George VI never expected to have to perform the Royal duties that come with wearing the crown of the great British Empire, but when forced into this highest of Royal positions, King George VI was now forced to battle his biggest challenge; his debilitating stammer.

Prior to the advent of Radio, a Monarch only needed to look the part and perhaps speak only to a small circle of advisors ,  but now with the development of technology the King of the Worlds greatest Empire could now speak to his subjects across the globe via radio transmission.

King George VI enlisted the help of speech therapist Lionel Logue to overcome his terrible stammer .

The Kings Speech is the story of these two men and the amazing friendship they develop as the newly crowned king is forced to deal with his speech issues just in time to symbolically lead his empire into another World War, this time against the Nazi menace.

For what would seem to be such a huge slice of European history, the film has a wonderful small intimate feeling. The monarch (Firth) hardly seems to be regal at all, just a man with a serious speech impediment and his mentor and friend Geoffrey Rush. The character Rush plays (Logue) will not refer to the King as his Royal Highness but rather as “Bertie”  (short for Albert..his birth name)

The bond these two develop will last a lifetime and Logue would be at the side of the King for every major public and radio address during his time as king.

The historical time period when the story takes place, (The coming of World War 2, The Death of the King, The Abdication of the throne and the resulting ascension to the throne) merely serve as a backdrop to a wonderful story of an unlikely friendship that developed between a man and his speech therapist.

That man just happened to be the KING OF ENGLAND!!

Colin Firth Must Win The Best Actor Oscar for this role!!

Grand Slam Weekend!!

Grand Weekend!

This past weekend I made a feeble attempt to celebrate my birthday, only to realize that as you get older your best bet in celebrating your birthday is staying home alone and watching sports or a classic episode of Seinfeld. I will not get into the details of my horrible birthday weekend so as not to embarrass my two best friends , lets just say my crew was in poor form and leave it at that.

But rather than wallow in my own personal post birthday misery, I choose to focus on the positive and the positive this weekend came in the form of Jorge Posada and The New York Yankees.

First things first, the Yankees are in first place for the first time since April 21, granted they have taken full advantage of a soft patch in the schedule that will end tomorrow as interleague plays brings the defending National League champions the Philadelphia Phillies to the Bronx. This series is followed by part two of the Subway Series where the seemingly hot METS should be brought back down to earth by the bombers.

Speaking of bombs, it seems that the stories of the demise of Jorge Posada have been greatly exaggerated!

Saturday Jorge came up with the bases juiced, fresh of the DL, the Yanks would have been happy with a base on balls or simple bloop single. But Jorge is on a mission to say to the Yankee Universe that he is healthy!  Playing as the DH on Saturdays game Jorge blasted a monster GRANNY that made that stadium erupt!

For just coming of the DL, this blast alone would have made everyone in the Yankee world breathe easy that our aging catcher had not lost a step in his time off.

How do you top a day with a Grand Slam, well in baseball you can’t top a Granny, but you sure can repeat it and that is exactly what Jorge did on Sunday. Skipper Joe Girardi rewarded Jorge on Sunday by finally playing him at catcher and Posada repayed the favor by hitting his second Grand Slam in as many days.

Once again a bit of history was being made in the boogie down!

Bill Dickey

The last time a Yankee player hit Grand Slams in back to back games was 73 years ago and only the fourth time in the history of the franchise. Another wonderful Yankee catcher Bill Dickey accomplished the feat in 1937, prior to that , the Sultan of Swat Babe Ruth did it in both 1927 and 1929. Now both those legends have their numbers retired in monument park and I assume one day Hip-Hip Jorge will get the same treatment and maybe, just maybe ,  a nice plaque in Cooperstown.

The Babe

Jorge..I am glad one of us a had a great weekend!!

Enjoy!!

Louis Vuitton Journeys Campaign

Every now and again certain brands seem to capture the essence of their products through creative, original and unique marketing campaigns.

For the past few years luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton has executed a series of brilliant print ads that comprise the ” JOURNEYS ” campaign.

It’s hard to put into words why this campaign is effective and on message. The images , captured by the brilliant (and very bankrupt) Anne Leibovitz , utilize an array of celebrity personalities , each in the midst of a personal “Journey”…..

Keith Richards seemingly on tour in a hotel room strumming on his guitar, Sean Connery overlooking the waters of the Mediterranean , Mikhail Gorbachev in the back seat of a car looking out the window at the Berlin Wall… Astronauts , Buzz Aldrin, Sally Ride and Jim Lovell gazing at the moon on top of a classic automobile. Andre Aggasi and Steffi Graff embracing in a hotel suite,

The images focus on the individual rather than the piece of Louis Vuitton luggage that each is carrying on with them on their “Journey”

It is the subtle placement of the Louis Vuitton pieces in the pictures which make each image all the more striking. And the latest addition to the campaign is no different, in the latest image soccer legends Pele, Diego Maradona and Zinedine Zidan, presumably in a dusty European bistro playing a game of foosball.  Of course this particular piece of the “Journeys” campaign is in line with the upcoming 2010 World Cup of Soccer, which will grip the entire planet for the month of June. The house of L0uis Vuitton is nothing if not timely.

I like to shed light on different subjects that I find to be close to perfect, The Louis Vuitton Journeys Campaign is just that..PERFECT.
