The Walk Off!!!

Pie In The Face

Baseball is a game of patience. All too often people complain that baseball games are painfully slow and that the sport does not deliver the same  fast paced , constant action that you might find in the NFL or the NBA. Now I certainly agree that baseball games can seemingly go on forever and without the benefit of being on a clock, you never know what time you might make it home. But as I stated above baseball is a game of patience and last night if you were fortunate enough to be in the BX at Yankee Stadium and you stayed till the end, well then your patience certainly paid off!!

The Yankees got their first walk off win last night in a game that seemed like a total wash for the Yanks being down 5 -0 , and when your team is losing and putting up no runs, well that 3 hour game can feel like chinese water torture. But this was true Yankee scratch and claw baseball, a run in the 5th , 2 in the 6th , 1 in the 7th and before you know it its 5-4 going into the bottom of the 9th and guess what..we have ourselves a ball game!!

And this is where your patience as a dedicated fans pays off and this is also where baseball separates itself from all other sports. Nothing is more dramatic than a late inning come back and Jorge Posada leading off the 9th crushed a Home Run to right field sending what was left of the crowd into a total frenzy. Game Tied.

And in the 10th Nicky Swish drove a ball to deep right and Tex tagged from third and slid safely into home…The Yankees Win and got themselves their first walk off victory of the young season , a pie in the face for Swisher , and sheer joy for me and my dad!

Patience Pays Off.

The Yankees did it again tonight. This was a close pitchers duel, but Phil Hughes was basically un-hittable. Hughes is the second Yankee starter in less than a week to flirt with a No-No. 10 Strikeouts to boot. He gave up one hit over almost 8 complete and he was simply nasty.

But other than the starting pitching clinic , I just like the way this team is grinding. They went into the 9th we a 2-1 lead, almost no margin for error for the bottom of the 9th and Brett Gardner gets an RBI single for the insurance run with Granderson scoring.

And Mariano Rivera is robotic again, one hit batter and one base hit, no biggie. Ice in his veins.

I am starting to think that Steve Jobs actually built Mariano Rivera.

The offensive prowess of this 2010 Yankee squad has never been in question, but when your # 5 starters throws a 1 hitter on the road against a potential playoff contender, things are starting to feel good.
