I cannot lie, I truly am a sucker for a good blockbuster movie. Drop that Blockbuster in the summer and you might find me first on line geeked out talking about “Avengers” history and why I cant wait for Iron Man 3 to be released. But the truth is blockbusters are blockbusters because these films do not only appeal to the nerdy gamer fanboys out there, no actually blockbusters have the broadest appeal of all movies….thats what makes em blockbusters!!
But the Summer of 2011 is shaping up to be “THE SUMMER OF THE BLOCKBUSTER” …..it seems every weekend this summer another huge movie will be released and the festivities get started on May 6 with the release of “THOR”
Now ever since the good folks at Marvel Studios started to cross promote their characters (for example) Robert Downey Jr. aka Iron Man makes a brief cameo at the end of The Incredible Hulk and then Samuel L. Jackson aka Nick Fury makes a very brief appearance at the tail end of the credits for Iron Man 1. ….I have been waiting for this summer when THOR the God Of Thunder and The First Avenger Captain America hit the big screen!!
As one might be able to tell I am well versed in Marvel lore which maybe does make me a nerdy fanboy..but I digress.
The point here is that Marvel has been laying the foundation for what might be the ultimate comic book blockbuster of all time ‘THE AVENGERS”. Where the stars of Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and the forthcoming Captain America all join forces to form a super group. Considering “The Avengers” would star Robert Downey Jr. , Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo , Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans , Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner, to say that this is anything less than a massive and ambitious endeavor is the understatement of the year!
So with Iron Man and The Hulk already two films deep in their respective franchises , the summer of 2011 gives us not one but two HUGE marvel superhero films..and both are sure to be huge…I hope.
Thor gets first dibs and really is the start of the entire summer movie season with a May 6th release date. Then on July 22nd Captain America gets his shot at once again becoming America’s most beloved super soldier. But Thor and Captain America will not be the only superheroes getting some burn this summer…On June 17th Ryan Reynolds get his shot at Super Hero stardom as his becomes the Green Lantern, which although not a Marvel release (Green Lantern is from the DC Universe of Superman and Batman) will also sure to be a big one.
But THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA are the two releases I am most excited for as they will lead into Iron Man 3 and most importantly the first “AVENGERS” installment coming in summer 2012.
The Marvel Universe is simply no joke!!
